Those who are not prepared

Those who are not prepared for the apprehension of a great purpose should fix the thoughts upon the faultless performance of their duty, no matter how insignificant their task may appear.By this means the thoughts can be gathered and focused, and resolution and energy be developed, which being done, there is nothing which may not be accomplished.

Start With What Is in Front of You!!! Not everyone has a great purpose figured out yet. You may know that you want more for yourself without knowing exactly what “more” looks like. You may be searching for your direction, trying different things, or simply working to understand what you want your future to become. That is okay. Not knowing your greater purpose does not mean that you have nothing meaningful to work on today.

Start with what is in front of you.

There are responsibilities in your life right now that may seem small or even insignificant. Go to work and do your job well. Finish the assignment. Complete the workout. Prepare the meal. Clean the house. Keep the promise you made to yourself. These things may not feel connected to some enormous purpose, but how you handle the small things can help prepare you for something much bigger.

Think about exercise. You don’t walk into the gym on your first day and immediately pick up the heaviest weight. You start with something you can handle. You learn proper form. You practice. You become stronger. Eventually, you are capable of handling weight that would have been impossible when you started.

Your mind can develop the same way.

When you decide to give your full attention to the responsibility in front of you, you are practicing focus. When you finish something even though you would rather move on to something else, you are practicing discipline. When you continue after things become difficult, you are developing determination.

Little by little, you are learning how to gather your thoughts instead of allowing them to constantly scatter in different directions. You are learning how to take the energy you already have and apply it toward something intentionally.

Eventually, that ability becomes useful for much larger goals.

You don’t have to wait until you discover your life’s greatest purpose before you begin developing yourself. Start with today’s responsibilities. Take the small things seriously enough to do them well. Learn how to focus, follow through, and finish.

The small task in front of you may seem insignificant today, but the person you are becoming while doing it may be preparing for something much greater tomorrow.
